PLAY AID: Mighty Commanders

I was inspired to write this article after reading the Mighty Champions article in WD350 and figured with the release of the Planetary Empires for WH40k that I make version of these rules for the expansion. Though lacking in originality (I basically took most of the rules as written in the article, omitted certain rules that didn't translate into 40k rules, and modified what was left into 40k rules) it still should prove to be a good analog for Planetary Empires.

I called the project Mighty Commanders (again, not very original, but still quite serviceable for what it is), and you can find it at the bottom of my blog in the 40k Supplemental Rules box.

Cheers,

Mark

The measurements are in and the findings are shocking...Part III: A Rant

It has come to my attention that some people seem to think that, just because GW and Forgeworld minis are in 28mm heroic scale (or because of some obscure fluff reference), that Warlord Titan minis should be of on the insane proportions of 5ft tall and that my measurements are utterly inaccurate.

Well listen up, because I am about to take you to school. 28mm, heroic or not, is 28mm, period. Furthermore, heroic only applies to the bulk of the minis muscles. Even GW will tell you that, regardless the scale of the mini, the average height of a Imperial Guardsman (never mind a space marine) is 5'8", or the average height of a modern adult male. Thus, (and I dare you to do this and tell me otherwise) taking a tape measure to measure for your self the height of an Imperial Guardsman mini head to toe, you get exactly 28mm.

Now, do you know how big, in millimeters, a Emperor Titan is given the previous calculations I did. I turns out that the Emperor Titan is roughly 1 meter in height, or roughly 1000mm. Given 28mm = 5'8", than 1 meter would equal 205'4" feet in height. Give that a one story building (based on acreage) is 10 feet in height, this would make for a 20 story Titan, approximately.

Given this, a Warhound Titan, at 250mm, would equal or 20 feet in height. A Reaver Titan stands at 400mm or 40 feet roughly.

The measurements are in and the findings are shocking ...Part Deux: The Legs

I know its been awhile since I last posted anything on this blog, but it is not dead...

In fact, I wanted to add on to an older post, "The measurements are in and the findings are shocking...", with another bit of measurement, the height of a Emperor Titans leg from the heel of the foot to the hip. Given most of the illustrations of Emperor Titans to date, in would appear that the height of the leg of an Emperor Titan would be comparable to the height of the torso, ergo the height of the miniatures legs would follow this same ratio. Judging how the height of said miniature would be roughly 3'3" or 39.375 inches, I had to round down this value to 39.3 and divide that by 2 to find that each leg would be 19.65 inches in height, or roughly 1'7", give and take a few decimal points.

Now for my next trick the height of the shin of the Emperor Titan. Again we will take half the height of the leg to find the height of the shin. One half of 19.65 is 9.825 inches.

Now for the width of the feet and the width of the hips. Given the various illustrations of the Emperor Titan you can tell the width of the hips is equal to that of the torso, or 15.75 inches. From each foot to the waist of the titan, you can form a right triangle. Given this information, each foot would be 10 inches wide, and the gap between each foot would be 4.4 inches.

Today is a day of mourning...

Yesterday at 5 pm a dear family friend had passed away.

George Byers, commonly and lovingly referred to as "Bubba", died of complications of heart surgery while visiting his ex-wife in California. It is not known what memorial and funerary plans there are at the moment.

He was directly descended from John Alden, who first came to America on the Mayflower.

He is survived by his sister, Carolin Byers, and half-brother, Mark Taylor.

George was a carpenter and artist, and had his work displayed in several art galleries in the Bay Area.

He will be dearly missed.

The measurements are in, and the findings are shocking...A Clarifaction

I feel it necessary to clarify what I meant by the phrase "in real life" in the previous posts. I am simply referring this to mean a real life 40k "28mm scale model" and not the actual fictional depictions of the titans themselves.

Sorry about any misconceptions or misunderstanding this may have caused.

The measurements are in, and the findings are shocking...Part 2: The width and depth of it

Hello again,

Here are some more measurements one the Emperor Battle Titan, this time the width and depth of it. Again we will use the ratio of 10.5:1. In measuring the titan this time was a bit tricky when finding both its width and depth, and I will not bother telling how I found these measurements as it would only serve to confuse you. Instead, I simply tell you what they are according to the datasheet as per the printed copy I have. First the width is 1.5 inches on the sheet. The depth is 1 inch barring the length of the arm weapons. This gives us a width in real life of 15.75 inches (1 foot and 3 3/4 inchs) and a depth of exactly 10.5 inches, minus the length of the arm weapons.

As to the width and depth of the Warlord titan, it is 11 inches in width and 10.5 inches in approximate depth.

Happy Gaming,

Mark

The measurements are in and the findings are shocking...

Given the size comparison in the 40k Apocalypse book of the Warlord titan, I was able to find the exact size to scale size of not only the Warlord titan, but also the exact height of the Emperor Battle titan as well.

You see, I first made measurements of the side by side comparison of a printed copy of the Emperor Battle titan. It so happened that my printer, by some weird quirk, did not print the datasheet as a full page print. As it were, the Warhound titan used as a size comparison example was exactly, for bottom of foot to the very top of the carapace, 1 inch in height. Now the Forgeworld website listed the miniature at being 10.5 inches in height. Using a simple ratio of 10.5:1, I then measured out the height, in inches, again from bottom of the Emperor titan's foot to the height of the vengeance cannon, to be 3 and 3/4 inches in height, or roughly 39.375 inches (just over of 3 feet, 3 inches) in real life.

Now for the really "hard" math. The picture of the Warlord titan and the Warhound used as a size comparison was, from bottom of foot to top of carapace, was 1.5 inches in height and that the Warlord titan was 3.6 inches. No big deal, as I had already calculated the 10.5:1 scale, so who cares about the .5 inches. Given the already established 10.5:1 ratio, the Warlord would measure 2.6 if put side by side on the Emperor Battle Titan datasheet, or 26.5 inches (2'2 1/2")in real life.

And on that bombshell, I bid you all ado.

D-4: The Forbidden Format

This is a film I did in college on a 32 dollar budget. It is rather amateurish, and rather short (59 seconds in length). Anyways, here it is for your viewing pleasure.

One more Preview of Ray Gun and Shadow

Yeah, I know, I just posted something on Ray Gun and Shadow, but I'm giving more of preview show the basic mechanic behind the game. Before you steal this idea, it is Copyrighted © Mark C. Caro 2009, All Rights Reserved.

To play Ray Gun and Shadow, you create a character. Playing a character is like playing a movie role. The character is free to do whatever they feel fits the scene of set by the Game Master. Complex task are done by rolling a number of 20 sided dice in an attempt to met or beat a set difficulty number ranging from 2 (effortlessly easy) to 200 (nigh impossible). The higher the difficulty number, the harder it is to complete the task. These tasks, called actions, include driving a vehicle, crafting an item, lying and determining lies from truth, acts of diplomacy and speech making, magic use, attacking enemies, and giving first aid. All other actions do not require rolling dice to perform.
There are four Traits which determine how powerful a character is at each character level: Body, Mind, Coordination, and Essence. Each Trait is determined by the allocation of Build Points. Each build point gives one dice to roll when performing actions related to that Trait. The maximum number of Build Points one can have for a Trait is ten.

Each character starts with 5 build points at first level.

At 5th level and every five levels thereafter a character gains 1 build point.

There is an upward maximum of 40 levels one can gain. Gaining a level requires gaining experience. Experience is gained when a character defeats enemies of higher level than them, by defeating groups of enemies of equal or lower levels, and by completing non-combat actions that are required during a mission. To gain 2nd level, one needs 1,000 points of Experience. Each additional level requires double the number of the character's current Experience point level. For example, to get to 3rd level, a character would require 2,000 Experience, while to get to 4th level the character would require 4,000 Experience, and so on.

Work in Progress: Ray Gun and Shadow RPG

Today I've worked on a project that has been in the works since Oct. of 08. It is a an pulp sci-fi horror roleplaying game called Ray Gun and Shadow. In this game, there are no classes, feats, or skills, only the four abilities of Body, Mind, Coordination, and the magical ability Essence. All you need dice wise are ten 20 sided dice and four 6 sided dice.

Here is a preview explaining the abilities.

  • Body: Represents the character's over all strength and health. It determines how many Hit Points (HP) they have and how many Hit Points are healed per day. How well a character can hit an opponent in melee and how much damage they do with a melee weapon is also determined by Body. In addition, Body determines how well a character can swim, carry loads, jump, and climb. Diseases, poison, and radiation effect Body, and the higher the Body score, the better the character is at resisting these effects. The character also use body to determine their Resiliency score, which is used to determine how well they are at taking damage from weapons, and is opposed by the weapons Strength.

  • Mind: Represents the character's native intelligence, force of personality, wisdom, and reasoning ability. It determines how much a character knows, how good they are at building items, ability to lie, how to determine when someone is lying, and how well they are at diplomacy and leadership. How much Requisition Points (RP) a character receives is determined by Mind. Mind also determines how well a character can drive land-based vehicles and to steer sea going vessels.

  • Coordination: Determines how well a character can balance themselves, their level of perception, ability to dodge both melee and ranged attacks, and how good they are at aiming at and hitting opponents at range. It is also used to determine how well a character can pilot aircraft and rocket ships.

  • Essence: Determines the character's ability to wield the power of magic and how powerful a spell they can cast.
The project is getting close to completion, but I'm not giving a release date, because I'm working on this project all by my lonesome. No, seriously, I'm the only person working on this project.

Keep an eye out, because it is about halfway done, and this will be the only place that will have this.
